Jacksonville, Florida, USA – Two swimmers were rescued after being swept out by a strong current, with drone technology helping coordinate the emergency response at a local beach last month.
Unmanned Aerial Systems Detective Strickland assisted Ocean Rescue by providing live aerial footage from a drone, which allowed lifeguards on shore to guide responders in the water toward the swimmers.
The real-time video helped lifeguards coordinate the rescue effort and bring both swimmers safely back to shore after they were pulled away from the coastline by the current.
Authorities reminded beachgoers that warm weather should not lead to unsafe behavior in the water and emphasized the importance of swimming with a buddy and ensuring someone on land is aware of swimmers in the water.
Officials also advised people not to overestimate their swimming ability and to avoid entering the water when red flags are displayed. They encouraged anyone in distress to contact Ocean Rescue or Beach Patrol for immediate assistance.
The message was shared as part of a broader safety reminder ahead of the busy beach season.
