Huangmei, Hubei, China – A speeding heavy semi-trailer truck crashed through a central highway barrier and entered oncoming traffic during rainy conditions on May 19, 2026, on the Shanghai–Chongqing Expressway in Huangmei.
The driver, identified as Chen, was merging from a ramp onto the main roadway when the truck suddenly lost control, broke through the median guardrail, and slammed into the rear of an oncoming cargo truck.
The crash damaged both vehicles and road infrastructure, though no injuries were reported.
Authorities said the ramp where the incident occurred had a speed limit of 40 km/h. Chen later stated he had been traveling at “around 70” before the truck began sliding out of control while approaching the curve.
Despite attempting to regain control of the steering, the driver was unable to avoid the crash due to the excessive speed and the heavy momentum of the vehicle.
Traffic police determined that speeding caused the accident and held Chen fully responsible. Officers also issued serious criticism and conducted safety education following the incident.
Police warned that centrifugal force increases when vehicles enter curves at higher speeds, making skidding and fishtailing more likely, especially during rain or snow when road grip is reduced.
