SLCPD Officer Shoots Dog After Being Bitten in Salt Lake City

Salt Lake City — The Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) is investigating an incident in which an officer shot a dog after being bitten and injured by the animal.

This investigation began around 3:15 a.m. on Sunday, March 23, 2025, when SLC911 received a call from a convenience store employee at 1692 West North Temple Street. The employee reported people trespassing.

Upon arrival, officers encountered a large group in the parking lot and requested additional units. As officers approached, some people walked away despite verbal commands to stay.

An officer was bitten by a leashed dog that lunged at him. No one held the leash, allowing the dog to move freely. The injured officer broke free, drew his firearm, and ordered the owner to control the dog.

The owner regained control, but later handed the dog to another person. This handler struggled as the dog acted aggressively and broke free, charging at another officer.

The officer retreated, giving commands, but the dog continued advancing. It then turned and charged the first officer, who shot it.

The dog was critically injured and later euthanized by Salt Lake County Animal Services. The owner was briefly detained for safety and evidence preservation.

SLCPD officers allowed the owner a private moment with her dog and drove her home. The injured officer received hospital treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.

No arrests were made, but trespassers received verbal warnings. The SLCPD is releasing body-worn camera footage due to public interest.

Chief Brian Redd called it a “difficult situation,” noting the officers’ split-second decision to protect themselves amid a dangerous encounter.
