San Joaquin County, California – A video captures a large tarantula climbing up State Parks Director Quintero’s leg at Carnegie SVRA, drawing attention from visitors and wildlife observers.

California State Parks noted the timing coincides with tarantula mating season, which runs from Aug. to Nov. During this period, male tarantulas leave their burrows at night to seek mates, increasing the likelihood of public encounters.

After mating, males typically try to make a quick escape; female tarantulas commonly eat the male, though this does not always occur. If a female has recently fed or has ample food available, she may spare him.

The agency warned that sightings while hiking or camping may rise in the coming months and urged calm around these animals. “However, tarantulas are often misunderstood.”
