Salt Lake City, Utah — A high-speed police chase ended in flames as a semi-truck caught fire on a Utah highway, dramatic dashcam footage shows.
On January 9, 42-year-old Sonny Garret called 911 claiming he was “going to die” and that he “would never hurt anyone.” Soon after, he led police on a dangerous pursuit through central Utah.
Officers began following the truck on I-70, where Garret was swerving and changing speeds wildly — from 40 to over 80 miles per hour. He drove through multiple spike strips and eventually merged onto I-15.
One of the spikes ripped through the front tire, and flames soon erupted from the truck. The dashcam captured heavy smoke and fire as the vehicle rolled to a stop.
Garret exited the burning truck with his hands raised and surrendered to officers.
“No one got killed?” he asked after being handcuffed. “Nobody got killed,” a trooper replied.
Lt. Cameron Roden of Utah Highway Patrol said impaired semi drivers are rare but extremely dangerous. Garret is accused of driving under the influence of prescription drugs.
At the jail, deputies had to help him sit, stand, and even drink water.
