Rome, Italy – This morning, a stunning and emotional tradition returned to the Pantheon.
Red petals were released from the oculus of the iconic dome, symbolizing the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Virgin Mary and the Apostles.
The moving display marked the celebration of Pentecost at the Basilica of Santa Maria ai Martiri.
The ceremony was carried out by the Speleo Alpino Fluviale team of the Rome Fire Department.
As in previous years, they climbed to the top of the dome and released the petals, showering the crowd below.
The powerful moment filled the historic space with color and reverence.
