Vatican City – On April 26, X user Barry McLoughlin published a video showing people standing outside St. Peter’s Basilica for the funeral ceremony of Pope Francis.
He said: Pope Francis standing room only outside St Peter’s Basilica.
Pope Francis was laid to rest in private at St. Mary Major Basilica. Security was tightened in Rome as world leaders attended the funeral ceremonies.
Pope Francis was laid to rest in a simple underground tomb, in keeping with his wishes, outside the Vatican grounds.
His funeral service ended earlier this morning. It was simple and reflected his personal requests.
Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re presided over the funeral ceremony. He said the world ought to “build bridges, not walls” to honor the late pope.
Hundreds of thousands of people lined the streets of Rome to catch a glimpse of the pope’s coffin as it made its way to St. Mary Major Basilica.
Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi said that at least 400,000 people attended Pope Francis’ funeral proceedings in the Vatican and Rome.
“We estimate not fewer than 400,000 people between those present in St. Peter’s Square and those along the route,” Piantedosi told Italian media.
