Alexandra Headland, Queensland – A bizarre roadside scene unfolded last weekend as a woman riding a motorbike with a dog strapped to her chest was intercepted by Sunshine Coast Highway Patrol.
The incident took place around 2 p.m. on May 17 along Alexandra Parade.
Police stopped the 35-year-old Maroochydore woman and issued her a $376 traffic infringement notice for riding with an animal between her arms.
Officers described the situation as dangerous, despite the dog appearing calm.
Senior Sergeant Shane Panoho said the rider had purchased the harness online without considering the risks involved.
“We know how attached some people are to their pets, but it’s best to apply a paws-off approach when it comes to our roads,” he said.
He warned that the animal could react unexpectedly to traffic, pedestrians, or other animals, potentially leading to serious accidents.
“The rider and her pooch could have been placed in harm’s way or endangered others on the road,” he added.
While the dog may have seemed content, authorities stressed that proper control and clear visibility are essential for all drivers.
The Queensland Police Service reminded the public about the dangers of the ‘Fatal Five’: speeding, drink and drug driving, not wearing seatbelts, fatigue, and distraction.
They reaffirmed their commitment to reducing road fatalities and urged riders to think twice before putting novelty over safety.
