Asbury Park, NJ – A terrifying moment turned heroic Monday morning when an 8-year-old jumped from a second-floor window of a burning home at 510 Prospect Avenue.
Officer Dewitt Bacon and Officer John Walsh of the Asbury Park Police Department, along with area resident Joseph Dunbar, caught the child safely as flames and thick smoke poured from the house. The quick action ensured the juvenile avoided serious injury.
The child was immediately transferred to the Asbury Park Fire Department and taken to a local hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation and further evaluation. Firefighters successfully extinguished the blaze.
Monmouth County Fire Marshals are investigating the cause of the fire. Asbury Park Social Services and the American Red Cross also responded to support residents with urgent needs and housing.
“Asbury Park police officers train for fast-moving, dangerous situations, and yesterday’s rescue shows the value of that training and the strength of our community,” said Police Director John B. Hayes. “I commend Officer Dewitt Bacon, Officer John Walsh, and area resident Joseph Dunbar for their heroic actions in catching the child. All involved displayed courage and bravery — including the 8-year-old juvenile who jumped from the window.”
