Liverpool, England – On July 3rd, a video posted by X account The Way I See Liverpool captured fans solemnly raising the Liverpool FC flag to half mast in tribute to the tragic loss of player Diogo Jota.
Jota, 28, died in a devastating Lamborghini crash in northern Spain. His younger brother Andre, 26, also a professional footballer, was killed in the same accident.
The crash occurred early Thursday on the A-52 near Cernadilla, Zamora. The Lamborghini’s tyre blew out while overtaking, causing the car to leave the road, roll, and burst into flames, igniting nearby vegetation. Emergency responders arrived but could not save the brothers. Authorities have not yet identified who was driving.
Liverpool FC expressed devastation over the tragedy, calling the loss “unimaginable.” Fans have gathered at Anfield to lay flowers and pay their respects.
Jota had married his childhood sweetheart, Rute Cardoso, just two weeks before the accident. The couple had been together since they were 16 and share three children. Jota described himself as “the luckiest man in the world” in his final Instagram post, sharing wedding footage from their June 22 ceremony in Porto.
The Portuguese Football Federation confirmed both deaths early Thursday morning.
