Vila da Marmeleira, Portugal – Video filmed by X user Fake Blood depicts a road collapse caused by a landslide in the rural area of Vila da Marmeleira, near Rio Maior in the Santarem district, during a period of severe weather.
The footage was recorded on February 1, 2026, amid intense and persistent rainfall affecting large parts of Portugal. The saturated ground gave way, leading to the destruction of the roadway.
Subtitles explain that the road had been repaired relatively recently before being dragged apart by the force of nature, with the damage described as looking like “butter on bread.”
The accompanying text reads, “holy shit, and there’s still a week of rain…,” expressing frustration as heavy rainfall continued across the region.
According to reports, the incident was part of a wider crisis linked to tempestade Kristin and subsequent weather systems. In the Santarem district alone, more than 65 roads were affected by flooding and cuts, including locations in Rio Maior such as CM Lobo Morto Pe da Serra and the connection between Quinta do Seabra and Vila da Marmeleira.
The government extended a state of calamity to 69 municipalities, including Rio Maior, until February 8, 2026. Authorities cited extreme flood risks from saturated soils, rising river levels including the Tejo and its tributaries, and forecasts of up to 300 millimeters of additional rain, leading to evacuations, power outages, and emergency responses.
