Trentham, Australia – A heroic rescue unfolded in the west on June 2, as Labrador Ted was saved from an eight-metre-deep mine shaft in a coordinated effort by emergency crews.

Ted and his companion Penny, a Labradoodle, had gone missing from their owners’ property last Thursday.

Despite social media appeals and distant barking sounds heard by neighbors, the dogs remained lost for days.

At 11:43 a.m. on June 2nd, the pair was finally found on Pronk Track in Trentham. Penny was above ground. Ted was trapped inside the shaft.

Trentham Fire Brigade Captain David Wheeldon said a lucky encounter with neighbors led to the discovery.

Penny was distressed, but a firefighter recognized her and contacted the owners, who rushed to the scene.

The CFA’s Oscar 1 rescue team from Bendigo was called in to extract Ted.

Firefighters provided Ted with food and water while preparing for the descent.

Oscar 1 members entered the shaft and successfully brought Ted to the surface at 2:53 p.m.

He was returned to his owners happy, healthy, and safe.

Trentham Fire Brigade worked with Forest Fire Management Victoria to mark nearby mine shafts with pink ribbon and red tape to prevent future incidents.

Hepburn Shire Council provided support for those on scene.
