Kīlauea Summit Eruption Monitoring Overflight Captured

Kīlauea, Hawaii – The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory carried out a helicopter overflight to monitor the ongoing eruption in Halemaʻumaʻu at Kīlauea summit on March 5, 2025. The flight took place at 10 a.m. HST.

At that time, Episode 12 of the eruption remained active. However, it concluded later that morning at around 10:37 a.m. HST.

During the overflight, scientists collected lava samples from the north part of the crater. This sampling was done with approval from Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park.

The samples will be analyzed to support the ongoing hazard assessment of the eruption. The data will help experts understand the volcano’s activity.
