Kilauea Summit Eruption Captured in Stunning Aerial Video

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii – Aerial video of the Kīlauea summit eruption episode 16 shows a dramatic lava fountain and its lava flow. The footage was taken on April 1, 2025, during a monitoring overflight by the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory at around noon.

The lava fountain reached heights of over 650 feet (200 meters) at times. It fed a lava flow that stretched about 2,300 feet (700 meters) from its vent by noon on April 1.

The fountain also spread a tephra blanket to the northwest, reaching as far as Highway 11. Near the vents, the tephra deposit is up to 5 feet (1.5 meters) thick in some areas.

This tephra buildup comes from 16 eruptive episodes since December 23, 2024. The video offers a striking view of the ongoing volcanic activity at Kīlauea’s summit.
