Huge Sign Collapses from Milan Skyscraper in Heatwave

Milan, Italy – A huge sign fell from a skyscraper in Milan’s City Life district, sparking concerns about safety and climate change. The incident, captured on video by Annarita Briganti, has led to the temporary closure of the nearby piazza.

Briganti voiced her alarm, saying, “They’re already trying to downplay what happened. It’s a very serious incident, instead.” She pointed to the extreme heat as a possible cause, noting, “I immediately thought of the crazy temperatures, the impossible heat, and climate change.”

The cause of the collapse remains unclear, and officials have not yet released details. The piazza will stay closed for several days, leaving residents frustrated. Briganti emphasized the urgency of addressing the issue, stating, “The neighborhood must be returned to the population as soon as possible.”

She questioned the construction and maintenance of the huge sign, asking, “Was maintenance done, especially with the intense heat? Was climate change taken into account?” Briganti also criticized the size of the sign, saying, “We knew there was no need for such large signs.”

The incident has raised broader concerns about public safety and urban planning. Briganti called for a reflection on the common good, urging that decisions prioritize the community over profit. She added, “Every intervention should be agreed upon with the public.”

The closed-off area, described as “barricaded like a crime scene,” has left the neighborhood inaccessible, affecting residents, including children. Briganti expressed dismay, noting, “A neighborhood closed, taken from the people, and who knows how long it will take.”
