Heavy Rains Cause Flooding in Ubaté, Cundinamarca

Ubaté, Cundinamarca – Residents of Ubaté woke up to flooded streets after heavy rainfall overwhelmed the town’s sewer system on Tuesday night. The intense downpour led to widespread inundations across the municipality.

The Fire Department of Cundinamarca, alongside municipal authorities, quickly responded to the emergency. Social media videos captured the chaos, showing firefighters assisting residents. “This is the scene at the Antonio Nariño Cultural Center. We’re helping evacuate people,” one firefighter reported.

Another firefighter added, “We’re near the Coliseum, supporting the community to salvage their belongings. The water exceeded the sidewalk’s height, entered through the main door, and we’re helping lift household items.”

The Cundinamarca Departmental Firefighters reported handling 107 rain-related emergencies across 52 municipalities this year. In April alone, the region faced five mass movements, 11 landslides, eight floods, two storms, and two flash floods.

Natalia Gómez, head of the Cundinamarca Disaster Risk Management Unit, said high-risk towns like La Mesa, Anapoima, and Girardot are under constant watch due to their proximity to rivers and red alerts from Ideam. “We’ve had the most incidents there,” she told El Espectador.

Despite nearly 800 families affected by rains this year, Gómez noted no lives have been lost. “We’ve provided initial aid to help people recover their livelihoods,” she said, emphasizing the department’s proactive measures.

Cundinamarca has invested in machinery for 33 municipalities, cleaned waterways prone to overflow, and trained local risk management teams. A command post remains active to support firefighters if needed.
