Bristol, England – On May 22, X user FINickiest shared a dramatic video capturing the moment a fire erupted at St Michael’s Hospital.
In the footage, a massive cloud of black smoke rises from the hospital as two firefighters battle the flames on the roof.
The fire broke out shortly before 4:30 PM at the maternity hospital on Southwell Street. Fire crews from Avon Fire and Rescue Service responded swiftly and have since extinguished the blaze.
Pregnant women and newborns were evacuated from the building. Midwives supported them outside, bringing milk and fruit to keep them safe and calm.
Some of the women were taken to the Bristol University Life Sciences building for safety.
Hospital managing director Prof Stuart Walker praised the “amazing staff” for helping evacuate patients. He confirmed that the hospital, including the delivery suite, has now reopened.
Avon and Somerset Police reported that St Michael’s Hill remains closed and advised the public to avoid the area. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
