Vancouver, Canada – On April 27, X user Ethan published a video of the Filipino community in Vancouver mourning the victims of a car attack that killed 11 people.
Ethan shared that at a vigil for the victims, someone from the Vancouver Filipino community began singing “Amazing Grace.”
The tragedy happened during Lapu Lapu Day in Vancouver. A joyous celebration of Filipino culture ended in devastation when a speeding SUV plowed into a crowd.
The incident occurred around 8:14 p.m. as the event was coming to a close. The vehicle entered a pedestrian-only area along 43rd Avenue near Fraser Street, speeding past food trucks and striking many participants.
Vancouver police confirmed that a 30-year-old Vancouver man was subdued by the crowd and arrested. He remains in custody.
Kai-ji Adam Lo was later charged with eight counts of murder. Authorities noted that he had numerous past interactions with police related to his deteriorating mental health.
VPD interim Chief Steve Rai called the attack “the darkest day in our city’s history.” The victims ranged in age from five to 65 years old.
Rai said the actions of a single individual shattered the community’s sense of safety and left many lives changed forever. Some victims have not yet been identified.
