Berlin, Germany – A fire broke out Monday morning on the roof of the John Jahr Haus, a 17-story high-rise under construction in central Berlin, unleashing a wave of explosions and thick smoke.
The building, located just 400 meters from key government offices and near the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) headquarters, was suddenly engulfed in flames.
X user Philipp Mochine, who lives nearby, captured the moment. “Explosions in the morning next to my building berlin brand. I could not open up the window because it’s smelly. But the fire is soon gone! Thanks for the work PolizeiBerlin_E Berliner_Fw,” he posted.
Witnesses reported at least three loud blasts, which officials believe were caused by gas cylinders at the site.
Over 100 firefighters rushed to the scene. Roads were shut down, leading to heavy traffic disruption across the area.
Despite the intensity of the blaze, no injuries were reported. Construction workers were evacuated safely using an external elevator.
The John Jahr Haus, the tallest building on Kurfürstenstrasse, has become a focal point in the ongoing investigation into what sparked the fire.
Authorities have yet to determine the cause.
