Mason County, MI – The Mason County Sheriff is commending two deputies for their swift actions in saving residents from a burning apartment complex on Monday night.

Sheriff Kim Cole says the fire ignited around 9:50 p.m. on the first floor of the Glendale Apartments in Scottville.

Body camera footage of the rescue was released by the department to highlight transparency and showcase the heroic efforts of emergency responders.

Cole said, “It’s an example of what law enforcement officers do every day across the state and nation. We’re proud to promote their good work.”

Two patrol deputies arrived minutes after the fire began, finding smoke blocking the upstairs doors and trapping residents on balconies.

Sergeant Adam Claveau acted fast, driving his patrol truck to a balcony where a woman and child needed help, safely guiding them down.

In the footage, a child’s cries are heard as the deputy reassures them, saying, “We got you” and “I got you sweetie,” while assisting them over the railing.

Deputies attempted to remove the balcony railing but instead helped the woman climb over it, onto Claveau’s shoulder, and down to safety.

Sheriff Cole noted that all deputies carry halogen tools for emergencies like this, useful for prying doors or railings.

“I was proud they overcame obstacles to achieve a successful rescue,” Cole said. “That was awesome.”

He praised Sergeant Claveau, Deputy Matt Moss, and other responders for staying calm and solving problems under pressure.

Cole added, “In stressful situations, your mind can shut down, but these guys did incredible work, along with firefighters and residents who helped.”

The sheriff’s department often aids in emergencies beyond criminal cases, and Cole believes such acts deserve recognition.

“Sergeant Claveau and Deputy Moss are great guys. They’re probably embarrassed by the attention, but we’ll recognize good deeds every chance we get,” he said.

No fatalities were reported, and those affected received treatment from LIFE EMS and a local hospital.
