Vatican City — On April 23, X user Mercè Alonso JM shared a video showing a large crowd waiting to enter St. Peter’s Basilica to say their final goodbyes to Pope Francis, who passed away on April 20.
The video was filmed at 8:55 p.m. local time. It showed a line stretching nearly halfway down Via della Conciliazione, the main road leading to the basilica.
Alonso noted that the basilica was scheduled to close at midnight. However, due to the large turnout, the opening hours were extended to allow more people to pay their respects.
