Indianapolis — A train derailed on the near east side of Indianapolis Sunday night.
According to the Indianapolis Fire Department, crews were dispatched to Southeastern Avenue and Earhart Street around 6:30 p.m. after reports of a train fire. En route, they learned there was no fire.
Despite no fire, IFD units proceeded as dispatchers reported a derailment with a white powder spill.
On arrival, IFD confirmed six train cars derailed. Four were empty, but two spilled a white substance.
Authorities identified the substance as corn starch. IMPD posted on X that it posed no hazmat risk.
Five cars fell off an overpass near Southeastern Avenue and South Sherman Drive. One car hit a power line, prompting AES Indiana to assist with live wires.
IFD received a report of a red vehicle possibly under the overpass during the derailment. This remains unconfirmed as the cars are still on the roadway.
Cleanup is expected to last until Monday afternoon. IMPD closed Southeastern Avenue between Prospect Street and South Sherman Drive.
CSX is aiding cleanup with heavy machinery to mitigate the crash properly.
CSX reported no crew injuries and no threat to community safety. The cause is under investigation.
The Indianapolis Department of Public Works and Indiana Department of Transportation will assess the overpass bridge’s damage, which did not collapse.
Full cleanup and restoration may take days, with no exact timeline provided.
