Fort McCoy, Wisconsin – Contractors have kicked off a hefty task in 2025, shifting a third of five World War II-era barracks at Fort McCoy. On March 18, 2025, a barracks building from the 1600 block was hauled from its long-time spot to another corner of the sprawling military installation. These creaky old structures, rooted in history, are being uprooted to make way for shiny new officer quarters. The muscle behind the move? Devooght Building Movers from Manitowoc, Wis., who are lugging the hefty relics to a fresh resting place on the post.
This isn’t the first time Fort McCoy has seen such a shuffle. Back in 2023, the base made waves when it shifted its first barracks, a groundbreaking feat for the site, according to Fort McCoy officials. Now, the mission continues with these five barracks, each a whopping 83 years old. Built in 1942, they’ve stood firm through decades as part of the cantonment area’s original construction. The goal is clear: clear the deck for modern digs while preserving a slice of the past. Watch this space as the barracks roll on to their next chapter.
