Capsized Dinghy Sparks Lifeboat Launch Off Porthpean Beach In Dramatic Rescue Alert

Fowey, England – A volunteer lifeboat crew from Fowey RNLI was urgently launched on June 27 after a dinghy capsized off Porthpean Beach in St Austell Bay.

It marked the first call-out for Ross Jezard as helm of the D class lifeboat. The crew was tasked by HM Coastguard to respond after the dinghy flipped 500 meters from shore.

NCI Charlestown had a visual on the overturned vessel but, 25 minutes after the capsize, were still unable to confirm whether anyone was aboard or their condition.

The lifeboat launched at 1:45 p.m. and reached the scene by 2:05 p.m.

Before their arrival, a safety boat RIB from Porthpean Sailing Club had launched and managed to right the dinghy. The mast had snapped in two during the incident.

The safety boat began towing the damaged dinghy as the RNLI crew checked on the sailor involved. There were no injuries, and the casualty confirmed they could continue without further assistance.

After confirming the situation was under control, the lifeboat remained briefly on scene before being stood down by the Coastguard.
