Tegucigalpa, Honduras – In the early hours of Saturday, April 5, a ramp of the Juan Manuel Gálvez overpass collapsed in the 21 de Octubre neighborhood, near the exit to Valle de Ángeles.
The collapsed ramp is used to return to the ring road and connects with the exit from the 21 de Octubre area.
At the time of the incident, heavy machinery was traveling over the structure. The equipment was being used for maintenance work on the ring road and Fuerzas Armadas boulevard, known locally as “dragons.”
Only one person was reported injured. The victim was the operator of the heavy machinery.
The collapse occurred around 2:30 in the morning.
Emergency personnel and staff from the Municipal Mayor’s Office of the Central District (AMDC) arrived at the scene to close access to the area.
Municipal authorities have confirmed that investigations are underway. All types of vehicles are normally allowed to use the overpass.
The bridge was inaugurated on December 14, 2014, by local authorities and then-president Juan Orlando Hernández.
The project was built with an investment of 7.2 million dollars, funded by the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (BCIE). It was executed by the Secretariat of Infrastructure and Transportation (Insep).
The structure includes eight ramps designed to improve traffic flow to various parts of the capital.
