Manhattan, New York – Video shows the arrest of anti-ICE protesters during a demonstration outside an immigration court.
The NYPD reported that at least 20 people were arrested on Wednesday outside 201 Varick St., where several immigrants were detained.
Protesters were wrestled to the ground, pepper sprayed, and handcuffed by officers.
“There’s no way we can stay silent,” said one protester and immigrant activist who did not give her name. “This is not OK.”
Earlier that day, an immigrant family was taken into ICE custody inside the same building, according to multiple reports.
A separate cellphone video from the New York Legal Assistance Group shows ICE agents arresting a man at 26 Federal Plaza during a check-in.
The video shows a masked man, believed to be a plainclothes ICE agent, checking the man’s papers before handcuffing him. Several masked men then escort him into an elevator.
Congressman Jerry Nadler, whose office is located in 201 Varick St., said, “People show up for appointments and are being arrested by ICE, and I’m not sure what the grounds are.”
This comes one week after a 20-year-old Venezuelan student from the Bronx was arrested by ICE after his immigration case was dismissed.
Murad Awawdeh of the New York Immigration Coalition said, “ICE is trying to entrap people by dismissing cases so they can arrest them in the courthouse. This is incredibly shocking.”
Ace Sutherland of the same coalition said, “This is disgusting. My people do it the right way, and still get stopped.”
